For those who know me, I can be a sentimental chap from time to time. Being a horror writer, a lot of people assume I’m cold, homicidal and love wading through the misery of the human condition. This isn’t strictly true, and most of the time it’s my weird brain conjuring the hatred and misery. Sometimes, I love to relive nostalgic moments and as I advertise and promote today, this little gem came to mind.
In 2o12, I met one of my writing idols, Lee Child. After some chatting, general musing and inside-scoopery on his new Jack Reacher book and movie, he signed a copy of A Wanted Man for me. Needless to say, the message he gave me (after I revealed I write) is a massive personal compliment for me. True, he knew nothing of my writing at that point but he still wished me luck in the future.
Some writers may doubt themselves, me included at times, but if this isn’t proof that sometimes, just sometimes, your dreams get the kick up the arse they need, then I don’t know what is. I keep this close whenever I doubt my ability and it has helped me become a more confident, versatile writer.
A moment of reflection? Yes. A moment of inspiration? Totally.
